Softball goes 2-2 on the week, upsets UNT

April 2, 2019 by Owen Simpson

The Wildcats finished .500 on the week after starting on a high note against the Mean Green of North Texas.

Tuesday afternoon, ACU took down North Texas 9-1 in just five innings to end a seven game losing streak. Freshman pitcher Calie Burris got the start for the Wildcats, pitching four innings and allowing only four hits and one earned run.

Sophomore Kayla Keeling was a force offensively against the Mean Green. She finished 2-3 on the afternoon including a two-run home run in the second inning to extend the lead, 5-0.

Junior outfielder Lindsey Tomlinson helped extend the lead even more in the fourth inning with a two RBI single. She finished 2-3 on the day as well.

Freshman pitcher Jillian Hefner came in during the fifth to relieve Burris grabbing her first save of her college career.

Later on Friday, the Wildcats returned to conference play with a three game series against Incarnate Word.

The Cardinals came into the series batting near .160 as a team, but more than exceeded those numbers in all three games. ACU grabbed a win in the first game 9-5, but the Cardinals had 15 hits in the matchup.

Sophomore pitcher Samantha Bradley grabbed the win at the circle for the Wildcats. Improving to 3-12 on the season, she relieved Burris as the starter after just 1.1 innings. Bradley allowed nine hits and two runs in 5.2 innings to finish off the game.

The final two games, however, didn’t go ACU wanted losing 9-5 Friday night and again Saturday, 7-4. It was the first time the Cardinals have beaten the Wildcats since the 2015 season. ACU had won nine consecutive games against Incarnate Word going into the series.

With those two losses, the Wildcats move into a tie for last place in the Southland conference.

Up next, ACU will continue their home-stand with a three game series this weekend against McNeese. Meanwhile, Incarnate Word’s next matchup is Wednesday at UTSA at 6.m.
