SGA hosts first ever town hall

November 8, 2021 by Hannah Maniscalo

Student Government Association hosted their first ever town hall event Nov. 4. The town hall consisted of a panel set up to be an open discussion and question and answer format.

Lindsey May, SGA press secretary, described the purpose of the town hall.

“[The purpose was] to bridge the gap between the campus higher ups and students with everything from sororities and fraternities to organizations and funding.”

Students were given the opportunity to voice their concerns and opinions to those making decisions about campus life. SGA wanted to facilitate this discussion and provide an outlet to students who had questions or issues with changes being made on campus.

SGA came to the decisions to host a town hall when they noticed many students and campus leaders having complaints about the changes that were made to rushing and New Member Orientation.

SGA senators were present and students were given the opportunity to lobby for legislation ideas to the senators.

SGA hoped the town hall would give senators more ideas for bills to write and make students more satisfied with the reasoning behind many administrative decisions.

The panel consisted of  Robin McPherson, Tamara Long, Ryan Richardson, Mark Lewis and Cyrus Eaton.

The town hall began with a greeting from student body president, Bekah Jones and her vice president, Boone Denton.  Long and Lewis each took the opportunity to speak on their goals for the future of ACU, and this led into a question and answer session. 25 questions were discussed and the speakers on the panel got to speak about relevant campus issues.

During the town hall, a number of issues were discussed including the creation of an advising committee to oversee alcohol, partying and student life outside of campus. ACU is hoping to give students the chance to learn more about alcohol consumption beyond the AlcoholEdu program.

Long spoke about construction happening on campus currently and for the future. New Hall 2 will be coming in Fall of 2023 and Moody will be completed by Sing Song.
