Audiences at this year’s Sing Song can expect to get a little culture. ACU students from the International Students Association, Essence of Ebony and Hispanos Unidos will perform together in the mixed voices category. This group wouldn’t mind taking home first place, but co-director Linly Stowe, sophomore nursing major from Brentwood, Tenn., said the experience is what they are really after.
“We have had so much fun putting the show together,” she said. “It is really apparent when we perform.”
Surprisingly, only a handful of people involved in the act had any Sing Song experience at all; out of all those interested in leading the act, Lowe said she was the only one who had participated in Sing Song before.
“This is my first time to lead anything like this. It’s been more work than I expected,” Stowe said. “Laura Blake is our sponsor and she’s been a lot of help.”Camari Carter, co-director of the
act, vice president of Essence of Ebony and captain of SHADES step squad, said the idea was a collective one. Leaders from each of the groups began planning in Fall 2007. Carter said Essence of Ebony saw the joint act as an opportunity to fulfill
one of their goals.
“One of the things we strive to do is ‘be united in Christ.’ We saw this as a real chance to unite these groups,” said Carter, senior political science major from Los Angeles.
Uniting such diverse groups proved to be no easy task.
“It was hard to get word out in the beginning, and it has been a bit of a challenge to get everyone together,” Stowe said.
With help from countless people, Carter and Stowe found ways to overcome all of the difficulties they faced, while keeping the original goal in mind.
“This was something we were not going to get stressed out about, and we were just going to have fun with it,” Carter said. Evidently, they made it happen.
Laza Razafimanjato, senior interior design major from Madagascar and ISA president, took no leadership role, but will perform alongside fellow students in the act. He said this process has brought people together that might not ever have become friends otherwise.
“We haven’t really been involved in each other’s clubs in the past,” Razafimanjato said. “But through this we’ve all become friends.”
With only two days left until the first show, this group is ready to hit the stage.
“Each individual group has brought so many things to the act,” Stowe said. “We might win, but we have had so much fun doing it. That’s what I care about.Ó
