Students interested in auditioning for Sing Song host and hostess can sign up in the Student Life Office in McKinzie Hall until Wednesday.
Auditions will take place Monday, Oct. 18 and Tuesday, Oct. 19 in Cullen Auditorium. All full-time students with junior hours and a GPA of at least 2.5 who are in good standing with the university are eligible to audition.
Jamie Lyn Spires, graduate student from Arlington and assistant to the director for Sing Song, said three men and three women are generally chosen from the 80-100 people who audition. She said she expected more people to audition this year than in previous years.
“That’s exciting because when you have more to choose from, you can’t go wrong,” Spires said. “It’s a matter of who works well together and who sounds good together. It’s exciting to see all the talent on campus, and just because you don’t get it doesn’t mean you can’t sing.”
However, hosts and hostesses aren’t the only ones who can get involved. All Sing Song fans can participate in the show by nominating their favorite songs at www.acu.edu/singsong.
Tom Craig, director of student productions, said this year’s theme, “Sing Song FAVES,” lets any Sing Song fan nominate a favorite song to be performed by the hosts and hostesses. Craig said each song nominated will go into a pool that he and his team will use when choosing the hosts and hostess’ songs.
“Taking this theme, we have the opportunity for people to help create a playlist for Sing Song,” Craig said.
He said his team considers multiple factors when choosing the songs for hosts and hostesses. Songs must fit the hosts’ and hostesses’ vocal ranges and styles, translate into a suitable arrangement for the jazz band to play and be appropriate for the ACU audience.
This year’s theme also allows for more creativity among club and class acts, said Rebecca Hopkins, senior speech pathology major from Edmond, Okla., and Sing Song co-chair.
“It’s easier for onstage acts because it is a broad theme, and they can really do anything with it,” Hopkins said.
Craig said every few years the team of students, staff and alumni who plan Sing Song tries to incorporate a theme that is broad enough to let students pull ideas from several directions.
“Anything that can be translated into a favorite – so there’s a lot of freedom in this show,” Craig said. “It should be a lot of fun just seeing what creative ideas people come up with.”
Sing Song will take place Feb. 18-19. Tickets will be on sale from 2-5 p.m. Friday and 11:30 am.-2 p.m. Saturday in the McGlothlin Campus Center. Tickets will be available online starting Nov. 1.
