The Center for International and Intercultural Education will offer Study Abroad programs to Oxford, Leipzig, Germany, and Montevideo, Uruguay, in spring 2012.
Students interested in studying abroad during summer 2012, fall 2012 or spring 2013 should apply before they leave for Thanksgiving. Students studying abroad must take 15 credits for the semester.
Stephen Shewmaker, associate director of Center for International and Intercultural Education, said Study Abroad provides many advantages for students. The students will have good professors to teach, many classes to choose from and they also can get time to travel as a group and independently.
“They will take a trip as group, also they have some free time to travel on their own, they will have several long weekends and they typically have one week off like spring break,” Shewmaker said.
One of the neat things about the Germany trip is the chance students will have to experience Turkey for 10-12 days, Shewmaker said. The escapade is included in the Study Abroad fees.
Many students have already applied for the spring semester and the department will provide excellent professors to lead the trips, Shewmaker said.
The Oxford program will be led by Dr. Ron Morgan, resident director, Dr. Janine Morgan, assistant director, and Dr. Tracy Shilcutt, associate professor of history. The Montevideo trip will feature Resident Direct Wimon Walker, Assistant Director Rosalinda Walker, and Dr. Beatriz Alem-Walker, professor of foreign language. The Leipzig trip will be led by Dr. David Dillman, professor of political science, and Dr. Jennifer Dillman, assistant professor of sociology.
“I am anticipating an exciting semester in Leipzig learning about places and people and about the ideas that have impacted their societies or cultures,” Dillman said. “I have never been disappointed by travel abroad.”
Rachel Brown, study abroad coordinator, said students will have many options for learning experiences.
“The on-site directors teach some courses, as do the visiting faculty members, and there are also some online courses. We also have native-language speakers teach the Spanish and German classes in Uruguay and Germany,” Brown said. “Once in a while we will contact another professor to teach a course for the semester who is not planning to be a broad the entire time.”.0
