The Royce and Pam Money Student Recreation and Wellness Center is giving life to dead day this semester by hosting X-perience the Day on Monday.
Dr. Kerri Hart, director of training and fitness programs, said the event will provide a chance for students to try group exercises offered in the Rec Center during the semester for free. Hart said the main goal of creating X-perience the Day is to give an option of activity during the down time of finals week.
“We wanted to provide a time for students to escape the stresses of studying,” Hart said.
Hart said rather than sitting around on dead day, students should be active prior to a stressful finals week.
“Studies show that the more activity you do, the better it is for your brain,” Hart said. “College students that are active, their GPAs go up. That’s a good connection.”
Julie Kelley (’10), group exercise instructor, is a coordinator of X-perience the Day and will instruct several of the exercise classes at the event. Kelley said students will be able to attend eight different group exercises. The exercise classes offered are Circumference, Yoga, Zumba, Phase 1, Core, Bootcamp, Push and Capoeira.
“Group exercise is a great way for students to get involved,” Kelley said. “There is a community aspect as well as the wellness aspect.”
Hart said the event will also advertise the exercise classes offered at the Rec Center to try to raise enrollment in them next semester.
“I have always wanted to try out those exercise classes, but I didn’t want to pay before I knew what it would like,” said Chase Schubert, junior history education major from Allen. “All the free classes at the Bank will be a good way to try some out.”
Hart said the Capoeira and Water Aerobics classes will be offered for free in the spring, as well as a mystery class which Hart chose to leave unname. New exercise classes will be offered in the spring, including Cardio Kickboxing and Ballet.
