GSP to attempt volleyball world record

February 21, 2012 by Brookelee Galle

The men of Gamma Sigma Phi will take the court for 68 and a half consecutive hours of volleyball in April – an attempt at a world record. The Kinsmen hope to raise $20,000 for Habitat for Humanity.

The club is inviting everyone to come play volleyball in the The Royce and Pam Money Student Recreation and Wellness Center, beginning April 27. The club will be playing other teams for at least 68 and a half hours, which would set the new world record. Play will begin Friday afternoon and end during Chapel the following Monday.

“Beating a world record brings all the guys together and it’s a lot of fun-while having this awesome cause,” said Matt Sanderson junior marketing and finance major from Lubbock.

GSP president Houston Beasley said he hopes for 120-130 individuals to participate in the potentially record-breaking event. People at ACU can create a team with a minimum of six players and $100.

“They get to participate in the world record volleyball game, play against GSP, their money goes towards a good cause and they get free t-shirts when they play,” Sanderson said.

The men of GSP believe the event will be a good time of fellowship, but the real purpose is helping out a local family. The men hope the funds raised will go a long way toward putting a roof over a single mother and her three children, said Jeremy Hluchan, junior accounting and finance major from Grapevine.

“The best part of the event will be giving a family in need a home,” said Hluchan.

The club believes Habitat for Humanity is a worthwhile mission, with a goal of renovating and building homes for locals while sharing God’s love. The organization has raised $30,000 for the family, and by participating in this event; the other $20,000 will finish the home for the family in need.

Individuals interested in donating to the volleyball event can do so by mailing a contribution to Gamma Sigma Phi, 1222 McGlothlin Campus Court, ACU Box 28103 Abilene, Texas, 79699, or directly through credit card on GSP’s fundraising website, www.giveback.org.
