Freshmen: Don’t be ‘too cool’

August 27, 2004 by Sarah Carlson

I Am The Enemy

Freshmen have invaded my section in Chapel.

A row of annoying freshmen sat behind my friends and me on Wednesday, and it was almost unbearable. They had the attention span of gnats and would not stop talking. I even heard words escape a few lips that you only hear on HBO.

Um … yeah … that’s pretty inappropriate.

My friends had to turn around and tell them that in order to sit in our section, it is imperative they not be so distracting.

Now I’m not trying to pick on all freshmen. I was once a freshman and remember with fond and almost bitter longing the days I was able to take naps every afternoon, watch movies and spend hours with my friends.

But as an upperclassman now, I feel I should pass down some knowledge to ACU newcomers on how to limit annoying tendencies.

Things not to do:

1. Don’t loiter in the concourse of Moody or in the Campus Center mailbox area before and after Chapel.

2. NEVER drive to class and take parking spaces away from those who live off campus.

3. Don’t act like you know everything.

4. Don’t be “too cool.” (You know what I’m talking about.)

5. Don’t think it matters who you were or what you did in high school. Honestly, no one cares. This is a chance to start over; take advantage of it.

6.Don’t complain about classes and meal plans if you aren’t the one paying for them.

7. Don’t complain about U-100 or core classes within earshot of an upperclassman. Enjoy the easier courses while they last.

Things to do:

1. You can slide your card for Chapel before the little green light goes off.

2. Learn to deal with Bean food.

3. Get involved with organizations on campus! (Freshman Action Council, SA, International Student’s Association, International Justice Mission, Service Action Leadership Team, etc.)

4. Do Freshman Follies and try out for Sing Song.

5. Go to class. Just because your mom isn’t here to wake you up does not mean you can disregard your education.

6. You’re going to have to learn to deal with curfew.

College is a unique experience, so take advantage of your time here. Have fun being a carefree freshman. Some of my favorite college memories are from the stunts we pulled our first year and the great times we had hanging out. Make the most of it.

(*If you haven’t seen “Almost Famous,” go out and rent it.)

Several ACU students were removed from the seating behind the Utah Valley bench late in the fourth quarter while arguing with UVU fans. After a conversation with ACUPD and other staff members, they were relocated to the stands near the UVU bench on the south baseline.

An altercation occurred between Associate Head Coach Yannick Denson and UVU Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Josh Morzelewski ahead of the 1 p.m. tip. The playing surface was mopped less than an hour before tip, while the Wolverines were completing their pregame warmups.
