Study Abroad early applications due Friday

December 5, 2012 by Jimmy Isbell

The early application deadline for students who are planning to sign up for Study Abroad in Germany, Oxford or Uruguay  is this Friday.

The early application deadline applies to summer 2013, fall 2013 and Montevideo in spring 2014. Applying early typically guarantees a spot, but is subject to certain circumstances on the completed application. The application usually requires a non-refundable $250 deposit, but through this Friday the application will be half off at $125.

Stephen Shewmaker, interim director of the Center for International Education, believes students interested should plan well in advance if they want to study abroad. He encourages those who have questions to stop by the Study Abroad office on the first floor of the Hardin Administration Building.

“Study Abroad is a powerfully transformational experience, and students who go say it’s one of the greatest experiences they were offered at ACU,” Shewmaker said. “A lot of people find it hard to believe when a student says something like that, but you will never know until you go.”

Through study abroad, students have the opportunity to make the world their classroom, to meet new people you build relationships with and to experience a different culture and their way of living.

“There is no way to take your experience and encapsulate it in a way that you can pass it onto someone else and have them fully understand it, like a lot of things in life,” Shewmaker said.

Jackson Regas, junior psychology major from Sugar Land studied abroad in Oxford last spring and said he wouldn’t have such a great opportunity without the help and dedication of ACU’s Study Abroad program.

“I met people in different countries, saw many different living conditions and built relationships with the people I went with. I knew with having a family, full time job and many other responsibilities I knew I would not have gone to these places later on in life with my future responsibilities,” Regas said. “It was an opportunity I didn’t want to pass up. It truly was an amazing experience.”
