Students run in Buffalo Gap Zombie 5K

December 7, 2012 by Destiny Hagood

Zombies filled the Buffalo Gap Historic Village Saturday Dec. 1 for its survival fest and first Buffalo Gap Historic Village Zombie 5k run.

According to Buffalo Gap Historic Village, “for the event participants run in heats based on skill. The family run will be be a mile whereas the other two groups will complete a 5k. Each group is tasked with the mission of leaving the safety of the compound (The Buffalo Gap Historic Village) and racing out of town to pick up “anti-viral serum” and run back into town to the site. Obstacles are included, as well as….ZOMBIES!”

The Zombie 5k run’s prices were as follows, $45 on race day, $35 for individuals, $30 for students (ages 6 thru college with ID), $100 for a team rate up to four people, $15 for spectators (no race just party) and ages 5 and under are free.

According to the Abilene Reporter News, 450 humans entered the race.

Lauren Wasson, sophomore music teaching, voice, all levels major from Clyde, had a team of four participate in the race. Her team members were, Heather Turner, who is an ACU alumnae, Liz Barry and Shae Cheek.

“The Zombie’s were pretty amazing. They had make-up on and every single time you walked by, they would swing the wrench up and hit the pole so it was making loud noises,” Wasson said.

Wasson’s team participated in the Fingerfood Fun Run untimed event that started at 1:30 p.m.

Some of the other events at the race included the “Fast Food” race of 30 min, that started at 1 p.m., and a family one mile walk/run event.

“There were zombies stationed in the road,” Wasson said. “They gave you three flags to protect and it took about an hour to finish the race dodging the zombies.”

Buffalo Gap Historic village provided live music entertainment by Callahan Divide, and fun zombie-like food.

All of the proceeds from the Zombie 5k run went to beautify the historical village.

“It was fun, I would do it again,” Wasson said.
