The ACU women’s tennis team went 2-0 throughout the week with wins over Tarleton State and New Mexico State. After starting off conference 1-3 the team picked up two crucial wins over quality opponents.
Head Coach Bryan Rainwater talked about how big it was for the team to start heading in the right direction as the conference tournament inches closer.
“The Tarleton match could be a big turning point for us and a loss there we are in bad shape so getting that win was really big not only for us this week but for the rest of the season,” Rainwater said. “The WAC is wide open so we felt we still have a good chance to compete in tournament our upperclassmen getting two big wins for us in single gave us a lot of confidence.”
Upperclassmen Maryjoe Crisologo and Andrea Guerrero gave the ‘Cats two wins in singles and Crisologo and doubles partner Maria Cascos had another win at No. 2 doubles. Tarleton entered the match at 3-1 in WAC play.
As for the men’s team, The Wildcats took on reigning WAC champs New Mexico State and Grand Canyon University the upcoming week as they look to close out conference strong.
Nunez says that wins over both opponents will give the ‘Cats a lot of momentum heading into the back half of conference play.
“Two very good teams both team are in the top 5 the WAC is still wide open but GCU has been a consistent team and New Mexico is the returning champs,” Rainwater said. “but we’re a talented team and we know we can compete with both teams.”
The Wildcats face New Mexico State on Thursday and Grand Canyon University on Saturday.
