Senior Micah and sophomore Kaysie Hermsdorf, along with sophomore Nada Marjanovic had a great start at the University of Indiana Invitation with key victories against tough opponents.
On Sunday afternoon, the women’s tennis team won the majority of their matches in the tournament.
Freshmen Erin Walker, Ansley Boarman and Marjanovic won their Singles matches. After defeating Harvard junior, Sylvia Li, in consecutive sets, 6-0, 6-4, Marjanovic is undefeated with two wins and zero losses.
The Wildcats beat teammates Spencer Liang and June Lee first, then the team of Amy He and Amanda Lin. The Hermsdorf sisters defeated their Harvard opponents by a 7-6 margin.
Walker beat junior Ali Dawson in four sets, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0, (10-7), and Boarman did the same against sophomore Aleeza Kanner, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0, (11-9). Walker and Boarman also won matches against competitors from Marquette.
ACU gained two more victories over Marquette. Marjanovic, Walker, senior Emily Conrad and junior Brittney Reed defeated Dawson and Hernandez. Walker and Reed won 6-3, while Marjanovic and Conrad won 7-5.
Head coach Hutton Jones said that he is pleased with how the women preformed against their tough competitors and understands that this match was a test for his athletes.
“The number one positive I took from the UI invite was that we competed against some really tough colleges that are easily ranked in the top 50 or 70 and won a little over 50 percent of our matches,” said head coach Hutton Jones. “This invite was a stepping stone for our athletes and it tested their ability against really tough opponents from colleges such as Indiana, Oregon, Harvard and Marquette.”
Jones said this was a learning experience for the women and most of them gained confidence by competing against tough opponents and not getting discouraged.
The Wildcats’ women’s tennis team will not compete next weekend. However, the men will be playing several duals Friday and Saturday against Grand Canyon, Northern Colorado, Metro State and Air Force.
