The ACU softball team is on the road again and will continue to make progress this weekend as they play in the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock.
The Wildcats will play against Southern University, Sam Houston State University and Texas Tech University. The tournament will be beneficial to the Wildcats, knowing they will meet Sam Houston State later on in conference play.
Last weekend at the North Texas Invitational ACU lost to Sam Houston State 1-6. Moving forward, the team will know what to expect and how to improve to come out with a win.
Freshman pitcher Hannah Null pitched the second complete-game shut out of her career as she helped the Wildcats break their losing streak against Prairie View A&M last Sunday. ACU was off to a rough start at the beginning of the tournament, but pulled out a win in the end.
“I think we started out with a little bit of a rocky start, but we finished the UNT tournament with a win and so I think that’s going to give us confidence to go on throughout the season,” Null said.
Null has shown great improvement from the start of the season.
“Hannah’s done a great job for us,” head coach Bobby Reeves said. “She’s had a little bit of a growing curve coming into college but she’s about got that where she needs to be and it’s been very evident in the last game we played. She had 10 strikeouts and no walks.”
“We are just going to try to keep from having the big inning against us,” Reeves said. “We’ve had a tendency to give up six runs here, four runs, there and we battle from behind all of the time and hopefully we can eliminate that.”
The Wildcats open Friday with Sam Houston State at 11 a.m. followed by University of Rhode Island at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Wildcats will play Sam Houston State at 10 a.m. and Rhode Island at 12:30 p.m. The final game of the weekend series will be Sunday against Texas Tech at 12:30 p.m. All games will take place at Rocky Johnson Field.
“I expect us to go out and compete and hopefully get three or four wins this weekend,” Reeves said.
