The men’s tennis team rallied in its first wins of the season against Murray State last weekend in Kentucky.
The Wildcats defeated the Racers 5-2, but later that day and continuing on to Friday, ACU suffered losses from Lipscomb University and Austin Peay with scores of 7-0 and 6-1.
In singles, victories were made by senior Guilherme Gesser, juniors Jason Proctor and Marco Bensley and sophomore Nico Agritelley,.
In doubles, the Wildcats had four total victories.
Though the Wildcats were up against tough competition, head coach Hutton Jones predicts that this will only help the team in the long run.
“The men had some tough competition on their Kentucky Trip and that can only make us better,” Jones said. “I really believe we competed very well, which means to me that we looked like winners on the court whether we were winning or losing. That’s the first step, really.”
Tough competition will continue to roll over, as the Wildcats will compete this weekend at home against Tyler Junior College and Trinity University.
The tournament will be the first home tournament for the men this season.
“We play Trinity and Tyler and both are very tough as they are both, basically, #1 in their respective divisions,” Jones said. “I expect both to be close matches and we need to get comfortable in close matches”¦so we are looking forward to the weekend.”
Junior Brandon McCarty, feels confident in the play this weekend and knows what it will take for the team to come up with many wins.
“This weekend we are playing teams that have been strong in the past and we’re expecting no less from them this year,” McCarty said. It’s going to be a battle, but I believe we have what it takes to emerge victorious.”
ACU will first play Tyler Junior College at 1 p.m. followed by Trinity University at 6 p.m.
