Men’s tennis splits first home tournament

February 11, 2015 by Hannah Little

The men’s tennis team battled against Trinity University and Tyler Junior College last weekend for the first home tournament of the season.

The Wildcats were looking to step up their play to the level of success that the team has previously been working for. The team was highly tested as ACU brought home a 4-3 win against Tyler Junior College followed by a 4-3 defeat against Trinity University, which four of its singles matches went into a third set.

The split leaves the Wildcats’ season with a record of 2-5.

Against Tyler Junior College, ACU rallied in four wins in singles and one win in doubles with partners freshman Henry Adams and junior Marco Bensley.

Three wins in singles carried over against Trinity University as well as one win in doubles from senior Guilherme Gesser and sophomore Nico Agritelley.

Although the Wildcats didn’t have as many wins as the team would have liked too, there are still many positives to take away from the tournament.

“I take a lot of positives from my matches this weekend,” junior Jason Proctor said. “I think I performed at a very high level. To fixate on wins vs losses would be foolish, as I know the wins will happen if I continue to perform well.”

As the competition from the opponents varies, the team proves to get better with each tournament.

“I think as a team so far, we’ve only seen constant improvement,” Proctor said. “The new players are really stepping up, and coming up with some tough wins. While our team as a whole has performed well the whole season thus far, this weekend was probably our strongest showing overall.”

“Trinity and Tyler and both are very tough as they are both, basically, #1 in their respective divisions,” head coach, Hutton Jones said. “They are just like playing a solid DI opponent.”

Moving forward, the Wildcats will be home this weekend to compete against first Southland Conference opponent of the season, New Orleans. The women’s team will also be home competing against New Orleans, as the matches will kick off Friday.
