Through the first six games of Southland Conference play, the Wildcats have already matched their win total of four from a year ago. After finishing their first home stand of the season 4-1, ACU (4-15, 4-2) sits fourth in the conference, moving into the top five for the first time since upgrading to Div. I three seasons ago.
The Wildcats took 14-of-21 sets from their opponents during the home stand, as their most notable win came against Sam Houston State, a team ACU has consistently struggled with during the past two seasons.
With a three-game win streak urging the team forward the Wildcats head back on the road, a setting they were familiarized with during their 15 straight away matches to begin the season. ACU begins a two-game road trip when they take on Houston Baptist, who enters the match at 2-4 in Southland Conference play.
The Huskies finished their non-conference season 7-7 and opened conference play with a win over New Orleans 3-1. However, since then the Huskies have lost four of their last five matches, including a 3-1 loss to Stephen F. Austin, the only team to best ACU in their homestand.
HBU was predicted to finish as high as fourth in the Southland Conference in an early preseason poll, but currently sits fourth from the bottom.
After their stop in Houston, the Wildcats travel to the gulf coast for a meeting with Southland Conference leading Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Islanders enter the matchup a perfect 6-0 in conference after ending Stephen F. Austin’s 20-game conference winning streak.
Senior hitter Jennie Loerch said she is excited about the challenge Texas A&M Corpus Christi brings.
“Well I was watching film on them and it made me super excited because they are such a beatable team,” Loerch said. “I feel like our advantage is we are a really level team and I think we are just going to pick apart their little tendencies.”
ACU has been unable to beat the Islanders in each of the last two seasons, but head into the matchup with lots of confidence, after senior libero Madison Hoover earned Southland Conference player of the week.
Hoover is averaging 4.67 digs per set and is on pace to finish second all-time at ACU, as she sits just 62 digs away from Jessica Mayes’ 1,578 career digs.
