The Men of Frater Sodalis’ annual Haunted Island will be October 27 through 31 from 7:30 p.m. to midnight.

With 33 years of producing haunted houses, this is the fifth year Frater Sodalis is having their event at the island. Keith Sanders, senior ad/pr major from Abilene, is the club’s fundraiser and helped plan the haunted island.

“The island is my favorite location because it adds a totally different feel to it and just the environment is scary in and of itself,” Sanders said. “It’s the biggest actor in our presentation. We don’t have a lot of production quality and that’s not what we are trying to sell. It’s a very authentic and honest production.”

The Haunted Island is located at 401 N. Loop 322, on Loop 322/Hwy 80 on the East side. There will be a sign that will direct the public to the island entrance.

“We use to rent out the theatre or various buildings inside town and did the haunted house,” Sanders said. “It’s been used as a fundraiser so it allows our dues to be cheaper and allows us to function better as a club.”

Admission is $10 per person. Tuesday night will be Club Night. Anyone wearing a club shirt will pay $5 for admission.

Kyle Bowen, senior bible major from Grass Valley, Cali., is the club’s president and is looking forward to this year’s production.

“A lot of haunted houses I’ve been to rely on a lot of gimmicks to scare you, while we just let the natural setting play on people’s natural fears scare them,” Bowen said. “The location ties it all together with the dark trees. You can’t see well, so you’re guided by moonlight and tiki torches.”

Students can expect to see a labyrinth, some of the same rooms from past years, club members jumping out to scare them and a chainsaw at one point.

“It’s hard work to set up, but once you get to start scaring people,” Sanders said. “It’s a lot of fun and creates a good bond between club members. Especially the new members.”
