The Service Action Leadership Team is calling for students, faculty and staff to give back to the community by contributing to Turkeys for Taylor.

Turkeys for Taylor, a project run by SALT, provides full thanksgiving meals to families of Taylor elementary.

“We got involved with Turkeys for Taylor a few years ago when we recognized that there was a huge need from Taylor elementary families for Thanksgiving meals,” said Kyle Bowen, Salt president.

Traditional Thanksgiving meals are delivered in boxes that include: turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, corn bread, green beans, sweet potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, fruit cocktail, rice, macaroni and cheese, dessert and a roasting pan.

A full thanksgiving meal costs $70.

“After doing it the first year I was hooked,” said Mary Beth Cuevas, associate director of Leadership Camps. “I love seeing the appreciation of the families we help out.”

Students, faculty and staff can help by donating money to help pay for meals. SALT has set a goal of receiving $4000-$5000 this year. That’s would be enough to feed 57-71 families.

“About 65-70 kids a year are not able to have a Thanksgiving meal,” said Bowen, senior youth and family ministry and biblical text major from Grass Valley, California. “It would be awesome if we could fill the need for those families and give them the same holiday cheer that so many of us take for granted.”

Donations to Turkeys for Taylor need to be turned into the Student Development offices by Thursday.
