Roberts scores fourth goal in Wildcat’s win on Senior Day

October 17, 2016 by Max Preston

Soccer earned its third straight victory Sunday afternoon against McNeese State by a score of 2-1.

The women now move up to 6-1-1 in conference play and into second place of the Southland conference behind Central Arkansas.

McNeese falls to 3-5-0 in conference and is currently seventh in the standings.

“It feels good,” said junior midfielder Chloe Fifer. “We have kind of been hurting ourselves in these games this past weekend, but it feels good to get two wins going into SFA and it was really important for us.”

The Wildcats opened up the scoring with a goal in the second half from senior defender Kelsie Roberts giving her her fourth of the season and the outright lead in goals on the team.

Senior midfielder Leslie Snider and junior midfielder/defender Chantal Kinsey were each credited with an assist to Roberts’ goal.

McNeese then answered back with a 20 yard goal from freshman midfielder Rachel Palet, her second of the season, assisted by junior midfielder Sara Ortiz.

ACU would score the final goal in the 82nd minute, however, when McNeese was called for a hand ball near their own goal and junior midfielder Chloe Fifer was given a penalty kick and picked up her third goal of the season.

“My whole mentality this season has been for the seniors and to win for them, so that was really important to me to help us get that win on senior day,” Fifer said.

Senior goalkeeper Sydney Newton went down with a head injury in the first half of the game and senior Kelsey Dombrowski had to come into the game.

Newton made a total of three saves before leaving the game and Dombrowski made one.

Redshirt junior Annie Bravenec for McNeese saw eight total shots in the game and saved six of them.

This was the final home game of the season for the Wildcats, however, three more away games remain for the team.

“Our coach is telling us to stay focused,” said Roberts. “We have a tough game coming up Friday against SFA, they’re really good competition, so he’s telling us to have a business like mentality and keep it up.”

The remaining schedule for the women will include SFA this Friday, Sam Houston this Sunday, and Incarnate Word on Oct. 28th.
