Galaxy’s third annual Kirk Goodwin Run benefit dinner will take place Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Grace Museum to raise funds for next year’s run.
Kirk Goodwin was pledging Galaxy in 1984 when he was killed in a car accident while traveling home for the weekend. The men of Galaxy organized the run to honor Goodwin and help relieve the medical finances for his family.
More than 30 years later, KGR, a 5K and a half marathon held every spring, raises money to be donated to a family struggling with medical expenses.
Caleb O’ Neal, senior advertising and public relations major from Burleson, said Chase Beakley, a Galaxy alumni came up with the dinner. Last year’s dinner raised approximately $2,500-$3,000 for the KGR.
“There should be an outlet, other than people giving us money,” O’Neal said. “There should be something they get to attend, besides the race, that they are paying for to learn more about it.”
Pastor Mitch Wilbourn, a 1990 graduate, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s event and the details of the upcoming KGR will be announced along with the recipient of the KGR donation.
“Whenever we do the KGR, it’s not about Galaxy, it’s about the recipient family, Kirk and the legacy Kirk left behind,” said O’ Neal.

The 34th annual KGR 5k and half marathon will take place in April.
