Should the new student activity fee cause concerns?

March 5, 2015 by Optimist Editorial Board

The creation of a student activity fee has generated mixed feelings among students. The fee, which will be $25 per semester, is effective next fall. This will produce $95,000 that will go toward funding students entertainment, such as concerts, and hiring a part-time position to find said entertainment and of course all the allocations to student ... Is age a factor in keeping professors relevant?

March 3, 2015 by Optimist Editorial Board

Young people complaining about old people is a first-degree cliche. So we just want to clarify: that's not the point of this editorial. The point is that universities are one of the few environments where a large group of people in their early twenties spend their days listening to and learning from people twice their age. And this age gap affects ... [Read More…]

February 19, 2015 by Optimist Editorial Board

On Page 1 of this publication, one of our reporters wrote a story on the sexual assault indictment of Jacob Windsor, who was enrolled as an ACU student last semester. Though we as staff realize the sensitivity of this story and of the allegations in the indictment, we determined it was important enough information to share with the student body ... [Read More…]

SA makes wise choices with smaller budget

February 6, 2015 by Optimist Editorial Board

On Wednesday, the Students' Association met to pass a bill for their spring budget. It looked and sounded a lot like last fall's budget meeting, but there were a few differences worth noting. The most significant probably being the size of the budget as a whole. When the SA budget goes down, it usually means enrollment is down. But whatever the ... [Read More…]

Here’s to developments bringing more burritos

February 3, 2015 by Optimist Editorial Board

Community leaders in Abilene met with officials in the ACU Endowment Office last week to discuss the possibility of developing the northeast side of Abilene. ACU owns a lot of the land sitting over there. About 600 acres of land actually. While it is just waiting there patiently to be developed, building a bunch of suburbs seems peculiar for a ... Student speech is restricted at SA budget meeting

January 30, 2015 by Optimist Editorial Board

The Student's Association cabinet is not allowing student groups to debate at the SA budget meeting this semester. The Student Congress' official Rules of Order does not address students who attend open SA meetings but who are not members of SA. It does not say that they can take the floor, nor that they cannot take the floor. Yet come next ... [Read More…]

A call to students

January 28, 2015 by Optimist Editorial Board

In the past several months, we've spent hours scanning Yik Yak for positive, comical Yaks to feature on the editorial page.   Us editors have seen good, pure comedy, as well as comments we could only hope came from somewhere outside the ACU community.   This past week, during Chapel's celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., was ... Out-of-state students would benefit from shuttle

January 22, 2015 by Optimist Editorial Board

Finals week brings a list of challenges - tests, projects, cleaning and checking out of dorms, packing, etc. But some students have the added challenge of trying to find a way home at the end of the week. The majority of ACU students are from a nearby or relatively close town in Texas, making it easy for them to drive home for winter or summer ... [Read More…]

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
