Women’s tennis team bounces back in California
The women’s tennis team traveled to Malibu and Pomona, Calif., Thursday and won three of four matches during the weekend.
The ninth-ranked Wildcats faced off against Pepperdine to open the road trip but were quickly dismissed 8-1.
“We knew Pepperdine would be really solid,” senior Lacy Johnson said. “We went in there and did our best. It was good to get in some tough matches with them.”
ACU came back Friday with a 9-0 victory over California State-Los Angeles. On Saturday, the Wildcats defeated Northern Colorado 9-0.
Finally, the women beat the tenth ranked Pomona Broncos by a score of 6-3.
The Lady Wildcats ran their record to 23-4 on the season; with all four losses coming against Division I schools.
“We’ve played well against some tough D-I schools, but it only helped us when we played other Division II teams,” Johnson said. “We’re confident and believe we’ll be going to nationals.”
ACU will face Texas Tech on Tuesday and Southwestern on Wednesday in its final matches before the conference tournament begins.
The women will begin competition in the Lone Star Conference Tennis Tournament April 17 in Wichita Falls. The toughest competition will come from Northeastern Oklahoma, Johnson said.
“Northeastern will be tough, but we’re all playing great right now, and we’re really excited,” Johnson said.
