ACU marches into West Texas with confidence, pride and a winning streak. The 10-6 Wildcats face Lone Star Conference South Division foe West Texas A&M Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Wildcats, led by seniors Melanie Carter and Lindsey Blau, look to continue their successful season by upsetting the 15-2 West Texas A&M squad.
Carter, who is closing in on an ACU overall points scored record that will place her as only the second basketball player-male or female-to score over 2,000 points during their career, said she feels confident in her teammates.
“We are playing with a lot of confidence right now and we are excited about what this team can do,” Carter said.
Though Carter is close to a personal record for overall points, she prefers to put the focus on the team rather than herself.
“I honestly don’t know how many more points I need,” Carter said. “I don’t keep up with all of that, that’s a media thing. I am more concerned about this team and just excited about how we are playing this year. I would much rather get into the post-season tournament then break a personal record.”
The two may go hand-in-hand. The way Carter goes, so goes the ACU Wildcats. If the senior is successful down the stretch, likely she will break the points record and possibly place her team in playoff contention.
Carter can’t do it alone, but head coach Shawna Lavender said she has talented teammates playing alongside her.
“We are a team with more than one offensive weapon,” Lavender said. “We can spread the ball around and will spread the ball around to make sure and get everyone involved. We have enough talent that everyone on the floor can be a threat.”
