Justice Revolution stirs global awareness

September 27, 2006 by Optimist Editorial Board

The oversized signs on the side of the Campus Center and the students waiting to supply you with the “get outside yourself” backpack patches mean International Justice Mission Awareness Week has begun.

IJM is a purposeful human rights organization that advocates global justice through support of the collegians. ACU’s specific chapter works to eliminate sex slavery, forced slavery, corrupt police officials and illegal seizure of property.

Students interested in IJM can attain information and take part in this year’s awareness week, Justice Revolution.

From Chapel speakers, prayer time around the GATA fountain to the Tuesday night forum, IJM will focus on how our culture has lost its perspective in the fight between good and evil.

“Our goal is to raise up a generation that is passionate about justice in the world,” said Brandon Smith, junior political science major from Kansas City, Kans.

The battle is getting more fierce and the Church is getting quieter, Smith said.

The problems confronted through IJM are perfectly suited for a generation that has become so concerned with issues like global warming, poverty alleviation and fair trade that they have become trendy. Our generation actively desires global awareness, and IJM is an effective vehicle that not only provides that awareness but pursues needed changes around the world.

Teaming with IJM is a way to stay up to date on world issues and partner with other local ministries like Eternal Threads, an organization that raises money for the women of India.

Don’t be a mere observer during this week’s Justice Revolution. You don’t need another flyer or T-shirt advocating an organization that you agree with in theory.

Instead use IJM awareness week to learn about international human rights issues attend several IJM events, and find ways that you can serve other cultures less advantaged than you.
