ACU became part of the NCAA Division II in 1983. Nearly three decades later, the Wildcats are finally atop the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) poll as the No. 1 team in the nation.
A fortunate conjunction of events propelled ACU to first place today with 23 of 25 first place votes. The Wildcats defeated Angelo State 38-14, and an unranked Hillsdale (Mich.) team upset the previous No. 1 team, Grand Valley State, 27-24 Saturday.
Unbeaten North Alabama got the other two first-place votes, moving up one spot to No. 2.
The Lone Star Conference South Division is well represented with No. 7 Texas A&M-Kingsville (7-0), No. 13 Tarleton State (6-1) and No. 22 Midwestern State (5-2).
ACU will have to work to retain its top ranking against West Texas A&M on Saturday and again when the Wildcats travel to Stephenville to take on Tarleton State. ACU will play its final regular season home game against Texas A&M-Kingsville before going on the road again to face Midwestern State.
