Jumburrito, a Midland-based burrito restaurant, opened its doors in the former Taco Bell location on South First Street on Wednesday.

José Cuevas, Jr., founder and president of Jumburrito, established the restaurant with his wife in 1979, when he was 22 years old.

Since then, he has expanded Jumburrito to include four locations in Midland, two in Odessa and, now one in Abilene.

Cuevas said Abilene was a prime location for his restaurant.

“I really like Abilene’s community. My aunt lives here. I have uncles and cousins from here, and Ortiz Elementary even was named after one of my uncles,” Cuevas said. “I’m really excited for Abilene to have our first franchise.”

Laura Lybrand, junior communications major from Midland, said she is excited to have a restaurant from her home come to Abilene. Although, Lybrand said she anticipated the restaurant’s opening more for its breakfast fare than for its lunch and dinner menu.

Although Sharky’s, a burrito-based restaurant, already calls Abilene home, Lybrand said the two can’t be compared. Sharky’s, she said, is more like Chipotle Grill.

“I love Jumburrito,” she said. “Jumburrito is more like Taco Bell or Bueno, but better.”

Jumburrito serves breakfast burritos weekdays until 11 a.m., until 1 p.m. on Saturdays and until 3 p.m on Sundays.

Cuevas said Jumburrito is best known in Midland and Odessa for its breakfast. The restaurant makes its own sauce each morning and has extra large, fresh tortillas, along with stew meat, in addition to lean ground beef.

Cuevas said Jumburrito’s unique name came from his father.

“I was thinking Grande Burrito, or something along those lines, when my father came up with the name Jumbo Burrito,” Cuevas said. “We then dropped the ‘o’ and decided to make larger tortillas than normal to fit the name. So I really stole the idea from my dad.”
