Sing Song to mix with basketball

February 10, 2012 by Austin Gwin

The two biggest events that happen in Moody Coliseum are going to combine on this weekend. Saturday afternoon will mark the first ever Retro Sing Song Night at the ACU men’s and women’s basketball games.

Students are encouraged to wear Sing Song costumes from year’s past or from this year to watch the game. There will be judges on hand to give out group awards for Most Involved and Most Spirited. The winners of the awards will given one extra hour of Sing Song practice.

“This idea was a collaboration. We wanted to do something else after Christmas Slam around Sing Song. Tom Craig came up with the idea of this ‘Retro Night’,” said John Houser, the Assistant Director of Athletics for Operations.

This basketball season has seen a concerted effort from the athletic department to get more students in the seats at Moody. December’s Christmas Slam event was a huge success drawing a crowd of about 1,500, up from the typical 500 or less that attend most home games.

“It’s not about wins or losses, it’s about how much fun the kids are having at games,” Houser said. “We haven’t won a lot this year, but we have had a lot of fun. We want to draw kids back to the basketball games.”

The Retro Night was organized by Houser and Craig, the Director of Student Activities and Productions. Not only does it draw students to important basketball games for the men’s and women’s teams, but it promotes Sing Song which will take place the next weekend.

“I think it’s a great idea to get clubs and classes involved in athletics with Sing Song,” said Meredith Morgan, the director of the club act Sigma Theta Chi.

Saturday’s set of games will also be broadcast free online. Fox Sports Southwest will be streaming the game on their website, foxsportssouthwest.com.

The games begin at 2 p.m. with the ACU women taking on Eastern New Mexico with the men following. Awards will be handed out at halftime of the men’s game.
