The No. 8 Abilene Christian golf team finished second at the Lone Star Conference Championship this week at the Trophy Club Golf Club in Roanoke.
The Wildcats returned Tuesday, only five strokes behind the leading Cameron University Aggies after Monday’s round of 36 holes. But it proved too much for the team to overcome, and Cameron walked away with the win at 1-under-par 863. The ‘Cats finished at 3-over-par 867.
Despite the second place team finish, junior All-American Alex Carpenter claimed the LSC Individual Championship, finishing 3-under-par 213. Carpenter beat Ben Hargis of West Texas A&M by only one stroke, after he birdied the 16th hole and met par at the two finals holes becoming 3-under-par. Hargis finished with a total score of 214.
Carpenter tied for the individual championship in 2010, and won his third consecutive LSC Player of the Year title on Sunday.
Luke Carpenter followed his older brother, finishing tied for ninth place with his teammate Trey Sullivan at 3-over-par 219. The freshman was selected as conference honorable mention earlier this week. Sullivan, shooting his third 73, was named first-team all-LSC. The sophomore won Freshman of the Year last season.
Also placing for the ‘Cats were Kyle Dickerson in 16th at 7-over-par 223 and Corbin Renner tied for 21st at 10-over-par 226. Recently name Freshman of Year, Renner made a comeback on Tuesday after shooting a 79 for the day.
The Wildcats will return to action May 7-9 to compete in the NCAA Divison II South Central/Midwest Super Regional at the Jefferson City Country Club in Jefferson City, Mo.
The ‘Cats hope to make a run at a national title, after finishing third in last season’s NCAA Division II tournament later in May.
