SALT’s annual swap-and-trade event gave students an opportunity to donate or trade items they no longer wanted or needed Saturday.
With the end of the academic year and move-out dates rapidly approaching, this campus-wide event was meant to encourage to trade items or donate them to charity.
Participants brought items to the University Church of Christ parking lot between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. After they made donations, they were allowed to take anything that had been contributed by others. Attendees also received a coupon for a free Cajun Cone.
“Every year when people get ready to move out, they decide to get rid of some of their stuff,” said Karissa Sherry, senior Ad/PR major from Shermon.
Sherry said the event, sponsored by Nancy Coburn, has been around as long as she can remember.
“It’s also a really good opportunity for struggling college students to get things they need,” said Connor Hoell, junior psychology major from Long Island, N.Y.
While SALT’s main purpose with the recycling project is to encourage an exchange of clothes, school supplies and dorm-related items between ACU students, anything students don’t claim is donated a local charity.
“All of the extra items go to a non-profit that does a garage sale for a prison ministry,” said Sherry. “The ministry then uses the funds from the garage sale to give gifts to children whose parents are in prison.”
