Alex Carpenter, senior golfer, from Little Rock, Ark., has been selected for the second time to represent the United States in the 2013 Palmer Cup.
The Palmer Cup is an international collegiate event between the United States, Great Britain and Ireland. It will be at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Del. June 7-9.
“It’s an honor to be able to represent your country in anything, especially for me in a golf tournament like this,” Carpenter said. “It’s pretty exclusive and I’m really excited to get the chance to be there and play with some really good players.”
Carpenter’s four years at ACU have been filled with victories as he holds the NCAA career record for individual wins with 20. Professional golfer, Phil Mickelson, previously held this record from 1989-1992.
Receiving the honor of being selected for the Palmer Cup adds to the impressive list of awards Carpenter as already received at ACU. He is a four-time Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, three-time PING
All-American and received the Division II Jack Nicklaus award in 2011 as a national player of the year.
Trey Sullivan has played with Carpenter on the ACU golf team for three years.
“We’re all really excited for him,” Sullivan said. “He’s had a great season this year and has won a bunch of tournaments. Getting selected for the Palmer Cup is a big deal and I think he definitely deserves it.”
Carpenter said his time at ACU has helped him as a golfer and he’s thankful for his experience in Abilene.
“I had a really good first two years which was exciting and it opened up the opportunity to go play at some other schools,” Carpenter said. “I took some time to myself to really think about it and decided that I wanted to stay here.”
