Students heard the Chapel bells ring before Chapel on Wednesday for the first time in a long time.
Deborah Niccum, executive assistant to the dean in the College of Biblical Studies, said the bells chimed at least up until daylight savings time, but was not sure when they stopped ringing.
“I believe it was the Friday before daylight savings time someone from IT came to reset the timer and make adjustments,” Niccum said. “At that time we decided to turn the sound off in my office so I could no longer hear them chime directly in my office. To be honest with you, I could not tell you when they were last heard outside since the adjustment was made.”
The Chapel bell system is a finicky system.
Josh Olson, sophomore accounting and finance major from Allen, realized something wasn’t right as he walked to Chapel.
“I don’t really remember the last time I heard the Chapel bells,” he said. “I remember they used to ring everyday, but now that I am thinking about it I really cant remember the last time I heard them ringing.”
Isaiah Teran, senior sociology major from San Antonio, didn’t realize anything was missing.
“I didn’t even notice the Chapel bells had stopped ringing,” Teran said. “I guess I should have known since I have been going here for the last four years.”
However, the Chapel bells are back. A work order form was turned into IT once the bells stopped ringing, and now the bells are chiming around 11:20 a.m. every morning.
