Special awards honor prestigious seniors

May 6, 2015 by Abigail Runnels

A few graduating seniors will be honored Saturday with special awards and scholarships. Every year, the Student Life Committee, which is made up of faculty and students representing the different colleges on campus, selects students to recognize for their contribution to ACU.

Graduates will not be notified of their awards until Friday night at the commencement rehearsal. Many of the awards have a long history and are named after some of ACU’s most notable alumni.

Among the awards given out is the Trustees Award, which is awarded to about five seniors for the recognition they have brought ACU through their achievements, character and devotion. This award has been given out since 1953.

B. Sherrod Scholarships are also awarded every spring. Sherrod Scholars are selected based on academic excellence and contribution to the university. The number of Sherrod Scholars varies from year to year.

The Dean Adams Achievement Award is given out to one or more graduating seniors who has overcome significant challenges to succeed. This award has been given out since 1971.

Finally, the awards for Honor Man and Honor Woman will be handed out. This award is given to one man and one woman for exhibiting exemplary character, outstanding academic achievement and behavior epitomizing the ideal student. These awards have been given out since 1947.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
