Negative effects of non-organic foods

March 31, 2016 by Hannah Little

[IT’S OK TO TAKE A STRONG STAND FOR EATING ORGANIC, BUT YOU ALSO NEED TO TELL US WHAT THE MOST COMPELLING ARGUMENT IS FROM THE OTHER SIDE AND WHY YOUR ARGUMENT TRUMPS IT]

In an attempt to feed people by a more easier and productive manner, the food has become full of chemicals that are harmful to our health leading to many of the diseases we are faced with today; obesity, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. All of these affects are controllable by the food that we intake, according to an article from the Sustainable Table.

Mechanization is the process of changing from working largely by hand with animals and food products to doing that same work with machinery. It is what we now consider, processing of foods. Machines are used to help make the production of food easier and quicker to produce.

Though mechanization of the food industry may seem like a good thing to some, as it gives society a more faster and proficient way of producing foods, the realization is that mechanization can be harmful and have negative side effects to consumers. Organic foods should be brought more the light and invested in over non-organic foods.

Just as technology is evolving in our society, so does the food industry. From the development of agriculture, to the invention of the plow, and to the awakening of agricultural chemicals, industrialization in the food industry is constantly changing.

While all of this information may seem helpful to our society and food companies, it is actually causing more harmful effects.

According to a study from researchers from Georgia State University, emulsifiers are a type of food additives that is used to improve food texture and extend shelf life. They can be found in most items from margarine to ice cream to bread. Most studies have found that emulsifiers can cause changes in the gut bacteria. This inflammation is often associated with Crohn’s disease and also inflammatory bowel diseases.

Food production has become more dependent on resources manufactured off the farm, such as agricultural chemicals and fossil fuels, also according to the article. From 1948 to 2008, the use of agricultural chemicals has increased more than fivefold as mechanization has led to a greater dependence on synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. These fertilizers and pesticides are producing hormones and antibiotics to help promote the speed growth of plants and animals.

When Americans purchase processed foods, they are basically putting in additives in their bodies. These additives are substances that are used to change the food in some way to make it more shelf life. Antibiotics, pesticides, and hormones are also being put into the body when consuming processed foods. GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) are another unsafe item that is produced in the process of transferring specific traits, or genes, from one organism into a different plant or animal according to an article in Sustainable Table. So basically for health reasons, it is better to eat organic items.

Organic items refer to way that farmers grow and process agricultural process. Organic foods are produced in a natural way without the extra chemicals that harm our bodies.

Organic foods are not used with GMO’s, contain no synthetic pesticides, roundup herbicides, hexane, sewage sludge, or growth-promoting antibiotics and drug residues from ractopamine according to an article from The Food Babe.

These toxic chemicals that are being put into the processing of our foods that we mainly eat today could be driving our society into a world of excess health issues. Switching to eating organic food items can easily reduce these health issues.

In order to protect our bodies from illnesses and diseases, Americans should start looking into buying and using organic foods.
