Abilene Christian came out on top Saturday afternoon against Southeastern Louisiana 86-66 in Moody Coliseum. With this win, ACU clinches a spot in the 2019 Southland conference tournament later next month in Katy, Texas.
Junior forward Dominique Golightly led the way for the Wildcats scoring 19 points including four deep shots behind the arc.
Golightly said her team was thrilled to defeat the Lady Lions after falling to them earlier in the season.
“It feels great getting a big win against a team that beat us by three the first time we played them,” Golightly said. “I was most impressed with how eager the whole team was to get revenge on this team. We played hard and shared the ball really well and collectively took care of business.”
Junior center Lexi Ducat was also a big contribution for ACU shooting an efficient 7-11 with 18 points and rare three-pointer for her as well. She was also dominant inside finishing with seven rebounds.
The first quarter is where ACU took control shooting 10-16 including five three-pointers. The Wildcats finished the first on a 10-3 run to extend the lead to 26-14. The second quarter, defense stepped up for the Wildcats. Abilene Christian held the Lady Lions to just just 10 points in the second quarter limiting them to just 8-21 and 1-8 behind the arc.
Entering the second half, ACU led 41-24 behind Ducat’s 13 points and five rebounds in the first half alone. The third quarter, however, Southeastern Louisiana came to life draining three three-pointers shooting 7-13 overall. While the Lady Lions scored 25 points, the Wildcats didn’t lose a step offensively in the third with 24 points of their own.
Junior guard Charliee Dugas led the way for Southeastern scoring 26 points in their loss. She shot 10-12 at the free throw line and 7-12 from the field and contributed defensively with three steals.
With this win, ACU sits at 10-4 in the conference and third place overall behind Stephen F. Austin and Lamar. Meanwhile, Southeastern falls back into 11th place.
Up next, the Wildcats look to extend their three game winning streak when they take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Moody Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Lady Lions will be traveling back home for senior day when they take on the Lady Demons of Northwestern State Saturday at 1 p.m.
