ACU’s jazz band began preparing for Sing Song in December and will finally display all of their work on Friday and Saturday.
Band members perform in the pit, watching people perform right in front and behind them.
Kyle Finley, a sophomore music education major from Rockwall, Texas, plays the trumpet and is part of the jazz band for Sing Song.
“Just sitting there and getting to see everything surrounding me, and being part of it is a really cool experience,” Finley said.
The band is in the middle of the action, but their main job is to enhance the individual performances of hosts and hostesses.
“For a concert, the band is the main feature, so we are center stage,” Finley said. “We are the main attractions. Whereas for Sing Song, everything is built around supporting the featured singers. We have a whole set list of songs that they want to do. They give us a certain key and we have an arranger make them.”
Ashlynn Smith, a saxophone player and junior communication science major from the Woodlands, Texas, said volumes are adjusted to best suit each singer.
Microphones are attached to trombones and trumpets, and the saxophones have stand mics in front of them so the band can be amplified through Moody.
“Sing Song is definitely the longest week of the semester,” Finley said.
The band had a six-hour rehearsal on Wednesday, and a five-hour rehearsal on Thursday, as well as countless three to four-hour sound checks that took place throughout the whole semester.
“Getting to the first night of shows on Friday night is the most rewarding part because you get to hear everything come together and have a full audience there,” Smith said.
