The Freshman Ushers, the women of Ko Jo Kai and the men of Gamma Sigma Phi won first place overall in the mixed vocals, womens clubs and mens clubs divisions.
The competition was tight this year, with several ties for some of the scoring categories in the club divisions. Students booed during the Saturday night show after the co-chairs announced a tie for the women’s division in the entertainment category. Nick Tatum, assistant director of student productions, said ties are not uncommon for Sing Song, but haven’t happened in recent years.
“If the scores are exactly the same, we have to give a tie,” Tatum said. “Everyone was just good.”
He said some of the changes to scoring this year “evened the playing field” for competition this year. The changes included adding choreography and removing originality from the categories.
“It’s a step in the right direction,” Tatum said.
Ko Jo Kai last won Sing Song in 2014. The club’s act director, Kayla Torp, said she rewrote the act multiple times and the set designers even completely redesigned the set to put on a winning show.
“This has been a huge journey,” said Torp, a senior music education major from Waco. “We really wanted it this year. We knew it was gonna be our year and we worked like it would be.”
Gamma Sigma Phi also won first place last year. The act director, Sean Estes, said the competition was tight this year and his club took it seriously.
“We pulled through in the end with hard work and long hours,” said Estes, senior music major from San Antonio. “We finally started a streak again and it’s gonna continue.”
The Freshman Ushers won first place in every category except appearance. They were directed by Lauren Wertheim, global studies major from Abilene, and Abby Ware, undeclared major from Hurst.
“I’m just so proud of our group,” Ware said. “We worked really, really hard and we had so much fun.”
Ware and Wertheim both said both freshman acts were strong and they didn’t know who was going to win.
“Everything was so close,” Wertheim said. “The other acts were so phenomenal too.”

There may be a new shsten for scoring, but it sounds like the same ole same ole for the club division winners. Usually going to the clubs with the most alumni money and winners.

I can definitely see that in some cases *cough cough appearance* but if you take a look over the last 5 years Pi Kappa has gone from getting 3rd in entertainment in 2014(a year dominated by Trojans and GSP with Galaxy clearly in 3rd) to placing 2nd in vocals last year and 3rd overall for the last 2 years. TKG did very well this year and definitely had a shot at 3rd. It may take some time(maybe a long time) but maybe soon we’ll have a day in which competition isn’t just between the top 3 women’s clubs or the top 2 men’s clubs.
It just rotates. GATA used to be one of the smallest clubs on campus and now is in at least the top three since 2015. It’s also just sing song and it’s all about having fun.
