Softball battles through tough OU tournament, wins big at home

The Wildcat softball team battled through a tough tournament in Norman last weekend, coming up winless in four games.

In the opening contest against a competitive Missouri State squad, the Wildcats struck first after senior Holly Neese grounded out bringing in junior Donelle Johnson.

But a three-run homerun in the fourth by Darian Frost scored the only runs of the game for the Bears, and secured the 3-1 win.

Facing off with No. 4 Oklahoma left the Wildcats licking their wounds, falling 8-0 and allowing three Sooners’. OU pitcher Michelle Lopez picked her third win while ACU’s sophomore Shelby Craig fell to 0-3.

The Wildcats would face each team one more time in the Courtyard Marriott Tournament, but didn’t fair much better falling 8-0 and 8-1 to Missouri State and Oklahoma respectively.

Despite a coming up winless, senior Peyton Hedrick, felt optimistic about the weekend.

“It was a rough weekend for us, but we learned a lot from it,” Hedrick said. “We got to play against one of the best teams in the nation and we competed, and did some good things. Our defense is doing pretty good right now and we are working well together. As a team, we are trying to find our offense and get back to producing hits and scoring runs.”

The Wildcats responded with big wins in a two-game series with Bowling Green in Abilene. ACU claimed a 3-2 and an 8-4 win at home Tuesday. Two of the three runs scored by the Wildcats were unearned in the opening game.

In the second game, Craig picked up her first win of the season as eight runs were piled on before Bowling Green had a chance to score  in the finale.

“We did well defensively and our pitching is starting to coming around,” Hedrick said. “But playing against Bowling Green, we got a couple good hits and were able to score some runs to take both games. The wins against Bowling Green were huge for us. We needed the wins. It gives us some confidence going into conference this weekend coming off of two good games. “
The Wildcats travel to Hammond to battle Southeastern Louisiana in the Southland conference opener. The first game is on Friday at 5 p.m.
