Jones wins election for vice president, Kelley, Kennedy head to runoff Monday

April 6, 2018 by Haley Remenar

Rachel Jones won the election for Student Government Association executive vice president against Madeline Dayton, while Julia Kennedy and Ty Kelley will runoff for executive president Monday.

A total of 1,314 students voted in the election which is slightly less than last year’s total of 1,426 votes.

Adam Andrade, a senior political science major from San Antonio, also ran for executive president. Current president Danny Burke said in an email to candidates that a runoff is necessary because no candidate got a majority of the votes.

The vote totals are as follows:
Adam Andrade: 214 [16.46%]
Ty Kelley: 593 [45.62%]
Julia Kennedy: 493 [ 37.92% ]
Abstain: 41
Madeline Dayton: 563 [44.47%]
Rachel Jones: 703 [55.53%]
Abstain: 75

Kelley, junior information technology major from San Antonio, said there were a lot of great candidates and the result showed what team the student body wants to see together.

“I’ve put in a ton of work and I’m really passionate about this and I think the student body recognizes that,” Kelley said.

He said before the runoff Monday he hopes to persuade unsure voters that he is the right choice for the job. He said he and Jones will work well together.

“The amount of people who voted was a great turnout,” Kelley said. “Students really do care about who’s in these positions. It’s giving me motivation to move forward in the runoff process.”

Jones, communications major from San Antonio, said she hopes her running mate, Kelley, will win the runoff election Monday.

“I can’t wait to work towards making our ideas a reality,” Jones said. “I hope to work with Madeline on some of her ideas as well.”

Kennedy, junior English major from Lubbock, could not be reached for a comment. Dayton, junior global studies major from Katy, also could not be reached for a comment.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
