Honors College diversifies colloquiums this semester

September 18, 2018 by Breven Campbell

The Honors College will feature a variety of new colloquiums this semester.

Students in the Honors College are required to take two one-hour colloquium courses. The courses are either night classes or are part of a weekend short course. This semester, the colloquium options include: Magic: The Gathering, The Study of Play, How to Make Coffee, short-term mission trips and stand-up comedy events.

“The Honors colloquiums have been a fun addition to the regular offering of classes that we take,” said Logan Owens, senior Bible and ministry major from Spring. “They have helped liven up and expand much of my knowledge into little niche areas that I did not know I was interested in.”

The Honors College offers 10 colloquium courses every semester to give students a variety of options.

“My favorite colloquia has been the stand-up comedy colloquium I am taking this semester. We are learning about the mechanics and art behind stand-up comedy and visiting a comedy club in Fort Worth as a class on one of the Thursday nights we normally meet,” Owens said.

Sarah Winkler-Laster, academic manager and budget director of the Honors College, said the purpose of colloquium courses is to benefit from material that students would not normally learn in regular classes.

“Colloquiums introduce students to subject matter and why it is relevant to their major and to their discipline in a fun, unique hands-on way,” Winkler-Laster said. “Our colloquiums keep improving every semester. Our professors are getting more creative with what they are offering, and our students are excited about the new colloquiums.”

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
