Ultimate frisbee team hosts tournament on football field

April 5, 2019 by Brian Sweet

The ultimate frisbee team is hosting their annual tournament fundraiser at Wildcat Stadium on April 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Each team must have seven to 14 players registered and at least two girls must be on the field at all times. The team will decide whether to use pool play or brackets for the tournament format on Saturday morning.

Last semester, the ultimate frisbee team was officially recognized as an official ACU Club Sports team. This is the first time that they have been able to use the football stadium for their tournament.

After meeting with ACU Athletics, Nick Winn, team captain and senior youth and family ministry major from Nashville, said the club discovered being an official ACU Club Sport came with some benefits.

“We got to talk to Todd Rodgers and Drew Long and figured out that we could have a one-time per year use of the football stadium for club use depending on the schedule,” Winn said.

The club is expecting a big turnout for the tournament.

Kaman Turner, a junior marketing major from Fort Worth, said the club has a backup plan if a lot of teams show up Saturday.

“If we have so many teams sign up that we need more fields we will start using the intramural fields as well,” Turner said.

Money is the main reason why the team hasn’t been able to compete in many tournaments this semester. Saturday’s tournament entry fee is $5 a person at the gate, payable in cash or using Cash App. Proceeds from the tournament will be used for other tournament entry fees and travel.

The team has only been able to compete in two tournaments, one in Dallas and the other in Houston.

Winn said that having the tournament on the field could finally bring recognition to the club around campus.

“It’s really big for us because a lot of times we felt like a pretty minor organization for the last couple of years we’ve been here compared to Rugby and ESports,” Winn said. “To have that ability to raise campus awareness about our team is huge.”

The team’s next tournament is in Houston on April 13.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
