Students will perform ‘Sabrina Fair’ for three weekends

April 11, 2008 by Kimberly Prather

By Kimberly Prather, Student Reporter

The Department of Theatre will showcase its production of Sabrina Fair over the next three weekends in Fulks Theatre with a modern adaptation of the romantic comedy popular on Broadway 50 years ago.

The spring Dinner Theatre performance was written by Samuel A. Taylor and depicts a love affair in the mid-20th century.

The fairy tale follows Sabrina Fairchild, the daughter of a chauffeur, who falls in love with a wealthy American aristocrat in the Larabee family.

Neither Sabrina nor the rich Larabee family are quite the same after Sabrina returns from Paris, and everybody is caught in this whirlwind called life.

Throughout the play Sabrina is forced to find her place in society while balancing the task of challenging the elite Larabee family to see life in a different way.

Jenavene Hester, junior musical theatre major from Abilene, plays Sabrina Fairchild.

“Sabrina was fun to play because she brings a whole different outlook and takes you by surprise with her infectious talent for living,” Hester said.

Director Mike Fernandez, Assistant professor of theatre, enjoyed watching the cast bring this mid-20th century story to life in today’s terms.

“Every night at practice I enjoyed watching the actors bring the play to life. The characters are infused with a liveliness and come with a freshness in telling the story that still has the fairy tale quality,” Fernandez said.

“Sabrina Fair” is meant to be different from other plays in the way it connects and emphasizes with the audience in a comical and modern way.

It is different from other ACU productions such as The Crucible because of the upbeat, fun and refreshing aspect, Hester said.

The theme of the play is finding a way to conquer society’s
typical stereotypes and reach beyond that, to find the true love that exists though loving life.

“It is a modern American myth that anyone can overcome obstacles, including class and stereotypes, it is the promise of America,” Fernandez says.

The cast has been working hard to make sure this play was not a “museum play.” They wanted the play to bring fresh, new and invigorating life to the story. They said they have successfully done that and now are just ready for an audience.

“We are ready to perform. Ready for an audience to hear the jokes and to get a response. We want everybody just to come out and have a good time,” Hester said.
