Wildcats stumble again

October 25, 2009 by Ryan Cantrell

ACU fell for the second time in as many weeks, this time at the hands of Tarleton State Saturday night 13-6.

The Wildcats defense dominated the first half only allowing 48 yards of total offense. Tarleton had just three first downs in the half. However, the Wildcats managed just six points on three red zone appearances, which proved costly in the game.

In the second half the Wildcats struggled to move the ball with any consistency. The score remained 6-0, when early in the fourth quarter when Devin Guinn returned an ACU punt 57-yards for a touchdown. The Texans were flagged on the play for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the touchdown making the PAT a 28-yard attempt. Fred Thompson blocked the attempt to hold the score even at 6-6. The offense continued to face poor field position and a stingy defense. After dominating the first 55 minutes of the game the Wildcat defense broke when Scott Granthem hooked up with Jahmeel Hobson on a 75-yard touchdown pass. The Wildcats drove the ball back into Tarleton territory, but turned it over on a failed fourth and 17 when Gale could not hit Edmund Gates with 1:53 left in the game. ACU got the ball back one more time with 10 seconds left after a Tarleton punt. The Wildcats could not connect on two hail-mary attempts, ending the game.

This marks the first time the Wildcats have not scored a touchdown in a game since a 31-0 loss against Angelo State back in October of 2001.

The Wildcats drop to 7-2 overall on the season, and 2-2 in the LSC South. Tarleton moves into a two-way tie with Texas A&M-Kingsville after the Javelinas escaped Eastern New Mexico 38-31.

The Wildcats will face the Javelinas next weekend in the final home game of the season.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
