The ACU golf team brought home its first tournament win of the spring season Tuesday morning. The 24th-ranked Wildcats placed first at the Red River Intercollegiate in Thackerville, Okla., with Cameron finishing second and Midwestern State coming in a close third. The Wildcats finished with 593 points overall, just 11 points above Cameron’s 604.
ACU freshman Alex Carpenter finished in first place overall, while his brother Adam came in the third place spot. Tuesday morning’s win was the first of the season for Carpenter, who ended his final two rounds with a 71 and a 73. Adam Carpenter, who tied for third place, ended his rounds with a 147 (+3). Kyle Dickerson, another ACU freshmen, placed with 153 points.
Alex now has two collegiate wins; he came in first in the second tourney of the fall season. His brother, Adam, won the first tournament of the fall season.
With three freshmen in the top ten, ACU golf seems stout for upcoming seasons. After finishing 12th in the Coyote Classic on March 1,Wildcat golf is steadily gaining momentum.
The freshmen have been the top performers for ACU golf of late. Even though Cyril Bouniol, a junior from Laloubere, France, took the top spot for the Wildcats in the Coyote Classic, the Carpenter twins and Kyle Dickerson were right behind him.
The team currently boasts four freshmen, along with three juniors and one sophomore. The team is young and is ranked in the top 25 in the country.
“The real backbone of the team is not the freshmen; it’s the team unity that we have,” Adam said. “All of our players have the potential to play really well.”
With a young, solid roster, Head Coach Mike Campbell has the opportunity to lead his Wildcats to another national tournament. In 2007, Campbell led ACU to an eighth-place finish in the national tournament, something he wants to exceed in the coming seasons. The 2007 appearance was the Wildcats’ first national tournament in a decade.
“Every team that we go up against is a good team,” Adam said. “We just have to play to our fullest potential.”
