With finals week and the end of school approaching, two university intramural champions were crowned with the conclusion of the year’s intramural season.

For the third year in a row, the men of Gamma Sigma Phi were named the men’s overall champions, and the women of Sigma Theta Chi were deemed the women’s overall champions.

“We’re very excited to be crowned champions,” Siggie Intramural Director Christine Painter said. “We haven’t had the championship in a year or two, and it feels great to have it now. It’s definitely a big deal for us.”

GSP club member Chandler Harris acknowledged how prestigious the award is and said he is grateful for the quality athletes in club that made possible the victory.

“The overall championship is the ultimate one,” Harris said. “It’s such a big deal because it accounts for all of the sports throughout the year.”

GSP also has won five out of the last six men’s championships, and Harris said consistency is is a point of pride for the club.

“The championship is a testament to our guys in club – all of them are great athletes, but they focus on teamwork and unity, which is a big reason why we’re successful,” added Harris.

Alpha Kai Omega also made a strong showing in the spring intramural season. The club earned champion status in women’s champ soccer and softball. Alpha Kai club member L’Nae Allen said the club was proud of its women’s efforts.

“All of the girls worked very hard and competed at a high level,” Allen said. “I’m really glad we were able to win so that the seniors could receive some much deserved recognition.”

In the men’s recreational soccer division, “That Team” defeated Mabee Second North Elite 2-1, on a goal scored in the last minute of play. FC Passion was crowned the champion in the men’s champ soccer division.

The Little Rascals won the men’s recreational softball championship on Tuesday night after defeating The Possums, 17-16. The Little Rascals scored 7 runs in the top of the sixth inning to go up one and then held out a Possums’ rally to secure the win.

Little Rascals captain Zach Guerra said the team enjoyed its winning season.

“It feels great to be a champion,” Guerra said. “That was a fun game to be a part of. The Possums were the best team we’ve faced all year and the game was a thriller.”

The Peacocks were named the men’s champ softball victors after winning their game on Tuesday night, while the Zombies won the women’s recreational league softball championship.

ACU Intramural Director Kenli Edwards acknowledged the quality of teams this year and said she was pleased with the showing and product of the teams.

“This was a great year for intramural sports here,” she said. “We had more teams and participation than the past, which made things more fun and competitive.”

The completion of the Royce and Pam Money Recreation and Wellness Center next fall, Edwards said, will create more opportunities for intramural.

“We’re looking at adding possibly four sports – indoor soccer, racquetball, water ball and broom ball – to next year’s schedule,” Edwards said. “The Wellness Center will provide us with more gyms and allow us to add more games to each sport’s schedule.”
