New Fishing Club plans to huge impact in the community.

February 13, 2012 by Armani Williams

The ACU fishing club gathered for its inaugural meeting on Feb. 7, planning to bring several opportunities for all who love fishing.

During the first meeting, 25 to 30 people showed up to show their interest in the new club. In the meeting, they discussed what the club was about, ideas for the semester, possible service opportunities in the community with Big Brothers Big Sisters and other organizations.

The next meeting will be Feb. 21 and is open to anyone interested in joining.

“The upcoming meeting will be more of a get to know each other type of meeting but will discuss club dues, designs for out ACU fishing jerseys, and the upcoming tournament schedules,” said club member Glenn Halbert, sophomore criminal justice major from San Antonio.

The president and founder of the club is Riley Nipper, junior information technology major from San Antonio, and a former baseball player at ACU. Riley’s inspiration for forming the club is to share the knowledge of fishing to everyone.

“I always enjoyed fishing growing up as a child and joined a fishing club when I was in high school,” Nipper said.

According to Nipper the first tournament will be held March 31 at Lake Lewisville in Denton.  He also plans to enter tournaments all across the state and the prize money will go toward the club and scholarships.

“Hopefully one day we can host a tournament in Abilene and help with Big Brothers Big Sisters and other local organizations in the community,” Nipper said.

“The club is for all levels of experience and we want to encourage anyone with the love of fishing to come see what we are about,” Halbert said. “Since this is the first semester the club has been started, we are still looking for local service projects we can be involved with as well as local business sponsors that would be interested in supporting us.”

Halbert said if anyone has any questions about joining the club or wants to become a sponsor, they can email the club at acu.fishing.club@gmail.com.
