Library extends hours for an extra week

December 4, 2015 by Michaela Kasselman

The Brown Library has extended its hours until 1 a.m. beginning Nov. 29 through the end of the semester.

John Weaver, dean of library services and educational technology, said the hours were extended to “support the more extensive student research and writing that is often required for final projects and exams.”

Freshmen also have their curfew extended until 1 a.m. during this time to accommodate the need to work in the library.

The library’s additional services, such as the Learning Studio and Starbucks, will also participate in the extended hours, however, the Maker Lab and Writing Center will keep regular hours.

Maggie McAlister, senior English major from Abilene, said she welcomes the time extension because she stays focused easier at night.

“I really appreciate the fact that the library is open longer for these two weeks, especially for those of us who write best in the evening,” McAlister said. “It would be nice if it were open this late, or even later, throughout the semester.”

Many freshmen expressed their excitement about the extended hours and what it means for their curfews. Allen Martin, a sophomore English major from Abilene, found the extra time useful.

“It’s only an hour difference, which doesn’t feel like much unless you take advantage of it,” Martin said. “For example, last night I finished my research paper and then went to Whataburger.”

The library extending hours is helpful to many students because they are able to use the resources available to them in the library to get their final papers, projects and studying done.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
