Being editor changed me for the worse

May 1, 2015 by Madeline Orr

Being editor in chief of the Optimist this year changed me for the worse. For obvious reasons, this job made me a worse student. Lines were blurred between the work I was doing for class and the work I was doing for the next day's paper. I couldn't remember what would affect my GPA and what would show up on tomorrow's front page. This led to ... [Read More…]

April 22, 2015 by Madeline Orr

Dr. Jason Holland, professor of mathematics, teaches students about discreet algebra and math theory. But hanging on the walls of his office in Foster Science Building are photographs of nebulae, galaxies and star clusters - and they're all taken by Holland himself. Holland discovered his love for astrophotography in 2012 after he got his first ... [Read More…]

UBikes, the on-campus bike rental service that launched last semester, added more bikes to its fleet this week. Mary’s Paleteria: Ice pop culture

March 18, 2015 by Madeline Orr

Mary's Paleteria is a splash of color to anyone traveling down the bleak South Treadaway Boulevard. Between an abandoned gas station and a gravel road, Mary's bright pennant flags and painted tropical murals can't be ignored. Mary's is the only paleteria in Abilene, serving a variety of Mexican inspired delights, including paletas. A paleta is a ... [Read More…]

The worst party trick ever

March 18, 2015 by Madeline Orr

I haven't watched TV or loyally followed a single show in over a year. I honestly can't say the last time I watched something on Netflix. No, I didn't give it up for Lent or intentionally make some vow against TV. I promise I'm not a pretentious freak - I have nothing against TV, and I'm sure I would enjoy it. The habit probably started last ... [Read More…]

acuoptimist.com

The historical insurrection that transpired on the Capitol grounds Jan. 6 displayed the polarizing viewpoints of American politics and the means by which those will go to invoke their beliefs. It was nothing short of a tragedy. However, violent riots have been displayed more often than both major pa...
