Dear Editor: For the past two years Abilene Christian University has been fortunate to have Paul Anthony as the editor of the Optimist. He has covered campus news and local news stories with a professionalism one rarely sees in student journalists. There have been times when articles were published which "raised a few eyebrows" on campus, ... [Read More…]
Song leader refreshed by Tuesday Chapel
In the midst of all the discussion about Chapel, something different actually happened. I don't mean changing formats, forums, or the ideas about cultural diversity in worship. I'm sure the purpose of Carlos Macias' participation in Chapel Tuesday was to expand our worship by teaching the Spanish version of "Open the Eyes of My Heart". But when he ... [Read More…]
Students react to SA’s funding letter
Congress wasted $30,000 on bowling alley scoreboards March 3, the SA Congress approved $30,000 of your money to purchase an electronic scoring system for the bowling alley. Now some of you are probably feeling that your money was wasted, some of you are happy that you won't have to score manually ever again when you bowl, and some of you might ... [Read More…]
Visitor suggests Chapel changes
I hadn't been to Chapel in a long time, and it probably would have been longer, except for one thing: my oldest child wants to join the rest of you at ACU. When Chapel began, it seemed that three-fourths of the students were talking with their neighbors-just ignoring the devotional going on below. When it came time to sing-my son and I seemed to ... Reader concerned about ICOC
The International Church of Christ has changed toward a more autonomous relationship between congregations. Within some congregations the leadership permits greater flexibility. Now some are moving toward accepting non-ICOC churches of Christ. These changes are admirable but do not strike the core of what defines the ICOC. ICOC teaching, ... [Read More…]
Librarian appreciates commending editorial
To the Editor: The article about me that you ran on the editorial page on Nov. 14 touched me in a way that no other retirement-type tribute could do. I have loved all my jobs at the ACU Library-the director's job most of all-because of the work itself (never a dull moment except maybe during certain meetings); because of my great colleagues; ... Staff’s poor judgment affects student’s privacy
I will begin by saying how disappointed I am in the lack of wisdom shown by the editors of the Optimist in the Nov. 12 and the Nov. 14 issues. The two articles concerning the tragic accident on Campus Court specifically named the driver. Although I do know that this was not out of spite or any malice, I do think that this showed poor judgment ... [Read More…]
Sadie’s provides opportunites
Sadie's Week is quickly approaching, as many of my friends and I have been looking forward to this week since the beginning of the semester. However, after talking to several ACU women on the subject, they explained that they would not participate, much to my heartfelt disappointment. I would like to use this forum to encourage all available ... [Read More…]
If some lyrics are altered, many more must be as well
It is absolutely pathetic that Dr. Reese has taken it upon herself to rewrite a song that is not hers to rewrite. Roses are beautiful; Jesus himself was beautiful. When he was on the cross dying, he couldn't get any lower, and he had to be put there by people who were pretty much trampling him to the ground. When someone does something wrong, ... [Read More…]
Praise song reword changes form of art
Who are we to change the lyrics to "Above All?" If the author had wanted the song to end like that he would have written it that way. I highly doubt that he wrote the song on a whim. Even still, if some had a problem with the lyrics, they shouldn't change them to fit their agendas, especially over something like misunderstood lyrics. The lyrics, ... [Read More…]
