Students support Tenaska power plant

March 9, 2011 by Optimist Reader

The Republicans of ACU recently conducted a survey on campus in cooperation with Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow to measure student opinion regarding the proposed clean coal Tenaska Trailblazer power plant. We questioned nearly 20 percent of the ACU student body and found that support is nearly unanimous among students for building the power ... [Read More…]

Sonograms educate potential abortionists

March 2, 2011 by Optimist Reader

While I agree that the government should pull its hand out of personal health care choices, I find the mandate of sonograms for women seeking an abortion to be in the best interest of the patient for many reasons. First, I don't think a sonogram is primarily about health care, but instead about education. Education in the sense that she knows fully ... [Read More…]

Cornerstone creates new outlook

February 24, 2011 by Optimist Reader

Last Friday, the Optimist ran an editorial about the Fall 2010 Cornerstone class, declaring that it "failed colossally." Clearly it did not  "succeed spectacularly" - but neither was it the abysmal failure so described. Rather, it was a bold first step for this University, using a method and scale of teaching that was new to ACU: Spotlight ... [Read More…]

Christians need to love, despite judgment

December 1, 2010 by Optimist Reader

In the past two letters to the editor, we have seen one pushing for rights for GLBTQ community, and one saying they should not be accepted.  Let me present the 'in the middle' approach I have come to take. Being homosexual is not sinful. What is sinful is carrying out those thoughts and living a life of sex outside of marriage.  A point that was ... [Read More…]

Season of Caring’s name undermines spirit

December 1, 2010 by Optimist Reader

Along with the beginning of the holiday season this year, Dr. Schubert has introduced a series of outreach opportunities called the "Season of Caring," which is intended to become a yearly tradition. I'm sure that many lives will be touched through the combined efforts and outpouring of support into the many opportunities this presents here on ... [Read More…]

Christians can’t tolerate homosexuality

November 17, 2010 by Optimist Reader

Addressing GLBTQ issues as a loving Christian. Being a Christian is hard. And becoming one guarantees a hard life filled with struggles and conviction, especially with the loaded topic of: Sex. Because, without God, no moral rules would exist to limit or condone any sexual activity. Repeatedly, throughout the Bible, sexual immorality, adultery and ... [Read More…]

Core class creates discussions not answers

November 10, 2010 by Optimist Reader

This year, ACU blessed the freshman class with a revamped U100 course: CORE, The Question of Truth. As a freshman, I am especially grateful for the change. It means a lot to me to see the great efforts ACU made to create a course so beneficial to my academic career as well as my life. I can only imagine the level of training the professors must ... ACU should discuss GLBTQ issues openly

November 5, 2010 by Optimist Reader

Did you know there is a Queer-Straight Alliance in Abilene whose members include ACU students? No? Did you know that two weeks ago was Ally Week, conducted in opposition to harassment and discrimination against queer people? You probably didn't, because the administration does not allow us to publicize our activities or conduct them on campus. We ... [Read More…]

Students fail to respect “Come to the Quiet”

November 1, 2010 by Optimist Reader

Why on God's green Earth would someone feel the need to shout out "Red Robin" in the middle of Chapel? I understand Abilene is not the greenest place God created, but the point still remains - a certain level of respect is due to Chapel, and lately we, the student body, have fallen short. In Chapel last week, a student melodiously shouted out, ... [Read More…]

Every day, thousands upon thousands of sports fans file into stadiums, arenas and ballparks all over the country. These people want one thing: excitement. Sports fans crave thrilling, edge-of-your-seat action with plenty of highlight-reel plays. With this in mind, it is inexplicable why the sports-loving public so often overlooks the world's most ...
