Hockey: The Sports Fans Dream

October 18, 2010 by Optimist Reader

Every day, thousands upon thousands of sports fans file into stadiums, arenas and ballparks all over the country. These people want one thing: excitement. Sports fans crave thrilling, edge-of-your-seat action with plenty of highlight-reel plays. With this in mind, it is inexplicable why the sports-loving public so often overlooks the world’s most exciting sport: hockey. From the opening face-off to the final buzzer, hockey offers the fast-paced action and spectacular moments that true sports fans desire.

Speed is the most exhilarating aspect of a hockey game. While most other sports favor a slower tempo, punctuated by quick bursts of action, hockey constantly moves at a breakneck pace. With players skating the entire length of the rink in mere seconds, the action is constantly shifting from one end to the other. Teams are forced to switch instantaneously from offense to defense and back again.

Players pass and shoot at such a quick rate that the tiniest hesitation can prove to be a costly mistake. All it takes is a quick flick of the wrist to send the puck rocketing toward the goal. One minuscule moment of indecision by the defense, and the other team scores.

At such a constant state of high velocity, the potential for incredible plays is enormous. Watching a player fly down the ice, weave in, around and through opposing players, and fire a laser shot past the flailing goalie never ceases to amaze. Conversely, watching an elite goaltender make superhuman save after superhuman save is a phenomenon unrivaled in the sports world.

Right now, the calendar is full of quality sporting events, from the baseball playoffs to football to the upcoming basketball season. But in the midst of all that, sports fans shouldn’t forget about hockey. The professional hockey season is just getting started, and ACU’s inline hockey team starts their season soon (yes, ACU has its own hockey team), so there’s no better time to check out this thrilling sport. If you consider yourself a true sports fan, hockey has all the excitement you’ve been craving.
